In this WordPress Tutorial I will describe how to Optimize your WordPress URL’s – AKA “Change Permalinks”…

What is a Permalink?

“Permalink” is short for “permanent link”. It is basically the link that directly points to your web-page or blog-page.

In other words – your “Permalink” is a fancy way of saying “URL” or Web Page Address.

An Example is this page: “http://worldclassmedia.com/marketing-tips/wordpress-tutorial-how-to-optimize-urls/”. This is a URL that makes sense to the public – it also has keywords in the URL – the exact keywords I am describing in my article.

An ideal “Permanent Link” or “URL” is one that is clean – fairly short – no special characters (Da+=&[email protected]#m$%^&*n) and has keywords in it. WordPress’ default URL’s are just numbers – which does not have any SEO value.

Here are a few points you should follow to make your site better than the rest of the WordPress sites out there:

The first thing to change your permalink structure. In WordPress, you’ll find this page under Settings -> Permalinks. The default permalink is ?p=, but I prefer to use either /post-name/ or /category/post-name/. For the first option, you change the “custom” setting into “/%category%/%postname%/”

Save it – and you are done.

How Does This Optimize Your URL?

This automatically adds the Category and the Page Title as your URL. Which is a great feature that WordPress has. Pretty nifty.

You want to keep your categories separated as well, if you are talking about Cats – put your post in the “cats” category, if you are talking about Dogs – put your post in the “Dogs” category.
